Way back in mid July 2017 Jim Kent at Grizzly Strings sent me 2 of his “G-Strings” to put through their paces. Here are my thoughts…
It might seem a trivial point to some but with Grizzly Stings quality starts right from the very first moment.
The branding and quality of packging when you receive your string/s is simply beautiful. As I mentioned in my review video it made me happy just taking it out of my post box! Attention to detail is always a good sign!
The quality continues once the strings are unpacked…
Initial impressions are that the strings are absolutely perfect! Not “good” or “very nice“, but as close to perfect as its possible to achieve!
There are no whispy strands escaping from the splice (as can be seen with many new flemish strings), the strings are thoroughly waxed (the best waxing I’ve ever seen) and the serving has been applied with the same attention to detail as the rest of the string. In short…. VERY impressive.
I chose a very subdued traditional green/brown scheme but Jim can offer a whole pallet of different colours and hues. Robin Hood Archery has the following options to choose from via the shops drop-down menu but many others are available on request:
Red | Black | Blue | Green | Yellow | Orange | White | Brown | Tan | Pink | Gold | Purple
Basically, when it comes to designing the look of your string the sky is the limit.
So, on to testing!..
Whenever I review a product it really gets put through its paces. Bows and carbon arrow shafts for instance will be subjected to around 1000 shots in as many varied conditions as possible before I sit in front of a camera to impart my findings.
With the “G-Strings” the process was no different.
I had a “Hybrid” and a “Pro” string to test and used a 62″ hybrid bow as the testbed. Each of those strings had around 400-450 shots through them before my review video. I also managed around 200-300 shots with 2 different string models on my 74″ “Outlaw” English Longbow.
Testing Grizzly Strings on the OUTLAW English Longbow
I have to say that the strings performed faultlessly in all environments!
Speed and noise tests surpass the best on the market with only the “Pro” being marginally noisier than the Bodnik Whisper string that they were being tested against. However, performance, “feel” and above all quality make the G-string the better option every time! Looking at wear rates I can imagine that the G-strings will have roughly double the lifespan of the Whisper string. Impressive stuff.
As you can see in the video below the test involved time with the chronometer as well as shooting on the range at Robin Hood Archery, stumping in the forest and at the 3D course. Weather conditions varied from hot to freezing and bone dry to heaving with rain. Not once throughout all the time spent shooting did I wish for anything else on my bow!
“The G-Strings tick every box for me”!
One thing I did forget to cover on the video was string stretch. The Grizzly Strings come pre-stretched but they you can still expect them to “give” a little bit more once shot. However this pre-stretching does aid the string in settling down very quickly. In fact much quicker than the competition. Once the intitial stretch stops the length remains constant with very little tweaking required thereafter. No more constantly checking brace height, happy days!

I would like the thank Jim Kent for trusting his products to my intensive testing methods. It shows immense confidence in his products and he is completely justified to have such a level of confidence.
I will be shooting G-Strings from now on!
It works very well for me
If target archery is like darts, then field archery is like golf. Golf with a point, perhaps. Within minutes of arrival, I was testing my new-found skills on a grizzly bear or at least a picture of one with an outline of a heart and lungs sketched in, stuck on a piece of wood. A pleasing thud tells me my shot has hit the target, but I’ve only winged my grizzly. “I think we’d better run for it,” jokes Colin.
